As we were leaving Oklahoma and heading back into Texas, we were hit by unexpected weather. Cold rain and large wind gust left us struggling to stay on the interstate and my arms were sore from holding the steering wheel by the end of the drive. We did get a small reprieve at the end of the day, but our stops early on were quick jumps in and out of the car. Lunch was eaten on the side of the road after a quick in-car change of clothes into something warmer.
When we arrived into Amarillo, we took the opportunity to stop by the Big Texan Steak Ranch - home of the "free" 72 oz steak. If you can eat a 72 oz steak plus all the sides in one hour, it's free. If you can't finish, you pay $72. Two people finished just as we were arriving, but we didn't get to see them. We did have two attempt the challenge while we were eating. One didn't make it. The other, we didn't stay to watch. It was a fun stop and a great ending to the evening.
Stop #1: Tower Station and U-Drop-Inn - AKA Ramone's Body Shop from Cars.
Stop #2: Leaning Tower of Texas
Stop #3: VW Slug Bug Ranch - A fun VW take on the more well known Cadillac Ranch
Stop #4: Palo Duro Canyon - Completely unexpected. The landscape was flat and almost barren as we approached the canyon. We went down to the bottom and the views changed at every level.
Stop #5: Big Texan Steak Ranch - When we told people about our plans to travel west via Route 66, almost every person asked if we were going to stop here. Thankfully, it was already in our plans and I am so happy we did stop. It is definitely a must do if you make it through Amarillo. Take the steak challenge if you dare!
