Day #2 - From Mississippi to Texas and A Plan Foiled by Mother Nature

Well, the first night in the hotel wasn't terrible.  Addie is a bit stressed, and I have learned way more about my kids' sleep habits than I need to know at this age.  Alyssa sleeps like a rock.  Aidan fidgets CONSTANTLY, and Kailynn not only talks in her sleep, but gets up and starts speaking in tongue to things that aren't there.  A little disconcerting at 1 o'clock in the morning.  Addie slept on the floor by my side lightly barking for each noise she heard.  My sleep habit was no sleep, lol. At least I was entertained.

Seriously, Mom. Do we have to ride in the car again?

Stop #1: Windsor Ruins - the remains of a four-story Mississippi mansion destroyed by fire.  The old southern towns in old Mississippi looked as picturesque as described in books and shown on film with large oak trees beaming over the old roads and old Baptist churches on the corners.  As we reached the road to Windsor Mansion, we traveled up and down and through the green hills on a road that seemed to have no end.  No other cars in sight. And then we did stop.  But it wasn't the planned stop.  The road was covered with water from the recent floods and we were definitely not going to make it across. Not really a part of our plan, but it was interesting to see.

Stop #2:  Mammy's Cupboard - A roadside cafe built into the skirt of Mammy.  Not really that PC these days, so Mammy has been repainted with a lighter skin tone than her original coloring.  Whatever your feelings on the subject, it was a fun little restaurant with the BEST sandwiches.  I ordered a Roast Beef sandwich.  It was made with soft, sweet sourdough bread and a Miracle Whip dressing mixed with horseradish.  The meat was delicious, but the best part was the bread with the dressing.  I am not a Miracle Whip fan, but if you're going to do it, this is most definitely the way to do it.  The kids raved about their sandwiches as well.

Stop #3:  The Boggy Creek Monster - Finally heading out of the south.  More hills and fewer swamps.  The Boggy Creek Monster is Fouke's version of Big Foot.  So famous, that there was even a movie made about him in the 70's.  Of course, like anyone's 5 minutes of fame, the hoopla dies down eventually. The only remembrance of him is in a little gas station museum.  Quick, fun stop, and a great photo op.

Stop #4:  Texarkana, TX.  We made it.  Being in Texas makes us feel a lot further into the trip.  Granted, we are only on day two and still have 11 more days left.  Before you feel the need to jump in, I KNOW Texas is huge and we've only touched the tip of the iceberg.  With the exception of a small jump into Oklahoma, we still have 3 more days before we leave Texas for good.

Overall, the driving hasn't been too bad and we have stuck mostly on schedule.  The kids have been patient (of course, it helps that they are split up) and Addie seems more relaxed today.  Of course, she's getting a bit tired of being in the car and makes sure that when she changes positions, she sighs loud enough that we all can hear.

Tomorrow brings a Texan's take on a French favorite, a cemetery where the show must go on, and a world record that isn't.
