Day #3 - From Texas to Oklahoma - our Route 66 adventure begins tomorrow

Day #3. 10 more to go.

We started this morning in TX, and are now Oklahoma, but will end up back in TX tomorrow and for the next couple days.  We have finally hit dry heat. 93 degrees, and while the sun is hot, we don't feel like we are swimming.

Today brought a few more adjustments to the schedule, but we worked it out and ended up ahead of schedule and arrived at the hotel earlier than planned.

Stop #1: Texas Eiffel Tower - Of course, having seen the real thing, we needed to see the Texas version. Loved the addition of the cowboy hat!

How is it that I finally get a picture where none of the kids are closing their eyes, yet the DOG is somehow blinking?!?!

Stop #2: Showmen's Rest and Bull Rider's Reprieve - Located in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hugo, Oklahoma, there is a section designated for "all showmen under God's big top." This section, purchased by the family of a traveling circus, is the final resting place for many circus performers.  Further to the front of the cemetery, there is a similar section for famous bull riders. It is also the final resting place for Lane Frost, the bull rider that was brought into the mainstream by the movie, "8 seconds."  Looking at his memorial, I couldn't quite get over the very interesting off-handed compliment that was engraved next to his tombstone.

Poor Lane.  At least he knew Jesus.

If anyone knows why dice were left, I would love to know the story behind it.  Yes, I did GTS, but didn't find anything. Dice were left on many of the gravestones located in Showmen's Rest. Wonder if it is the same as leaving coins?

Stop #4:  We were looking forward to a BBQ joint called "Pit Happens," but it was bought out by some New Orleans BBQ truck.  We moved on.  As we were driving down a pretty much empty highway, I saw a lunch place with lots of vehicles and semi trucks parked in front.  That was as good as a sign as any. So happy we stopped.  This was the best BBQ smoked brisket that I have had in over 16 years. You can SEE how tender it was!  Props to this little middle of nowhere place.  Seriously the best!

Stop #4:  The World's Largest Peanut - Most definitely NOT the world's largest peanut (that one actually is located in GA), but a fun stop nonetheless. And it did its job, it got us to visit Durant and to buy some snacks and fuel.

After the full day of driving and just a few short stops, we were happy to finally hit Route 66 and arrive at our hotel.  Lots of mini-adventures ahead.
